Tile Mate

Tile Mate

The afternoon sun beat down on the cracked asphalt of the vet clinic parking lot. My beagle, Buster, had vanished. Again. This time, I’d sworn I’d secured his leash, yet here I was, sweating and shouting his name into the wind. This is where my Tile Mate enters the picture.

The appeal of a Bluetooth tracker in a situation like this is obvious. I deal with lost animals (and their exasperated owners) practically daily. So, a device promising to leverage the crowd to pinpoint your furry friend? Sign me up. First impression: sleek, minimalist design. The black square, smaller than a domino, attached easily to Buster’s collar. Installation was straightforward, even for a Luddite like myself. Download the app, pair the Tile, and… done.

However, the initial reliance on Bluetooth range, as opposed to a wider GPS network, is a bit of a gamble. Realistically, this means you’re reliant on other Bluetooth devices in the vicinity to relay the Tile’s location. If Buster’s roaming somewhere remote, you could be stuck. Unlike some of the more expensive trackers on the market that use GPS (like, say, the Whistle GO Explore), the Tile Mate’s range is limited.

The solution? Think strategically. I attached a Tile to my own keys, my wallet, and, crucially, a brightly colored harness designed for visibility. The harness gives me a second chance, too. So, even when Buster’s on a romp, it is easier to spot him from a distance. Back to the vet’s parking lot. I opened the Tile app, and, relief washed over me. It pinged! Buster, predictably, was two blocks away at the local park, investigating a rather pungent-smelling bush. The app provided a map with his last known location, and I was reunited with the rascal within minutes.

Here’s the crux: The Tile Mate isn’t a full-blown GPS tracker. But for everyday scenarios – lost keys, rogue pets in a relatively populated area, a missing bag at the airport – it’s a surprisingly effective tool. It’s reasonably priced too, unlike some of the options with a subscription model.

My verdict? If you are an owner, like me, of a frequently-escaped canine or a chronic loser of everyday items, the Tile Mate is a worthy investment. Buy it. Now.
